Get an extra year of free tax on your EV

Road tax sunny motorway

Up until now Electric Vehicles (EVs) have been totally exempt from road tax. But from 1st April 2025 any EV registered between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2025 will be subject to a standard rate (£195 in 2025/26) upon renewal. Below we explain an easy way you can get an extra year of free tax on your EV before the system changes!

Online road tax renewal

There’s a simple online process you can carry out now that delays you having to pay tax for your EV until next year. All you need to do is re-tax your EV online before 1st April 2025. This results in pushing back the deadline for paying tax until the next renewal period, which will be March 2026.

How do I re-tax my EV online now?

Follow this 8 step guide online to keep your EV tax free for another year. It will take you less than 10 minutes to do. Start by visiting the GOV.UK Tax Your Vehicle webpage. Make sure you have your V5C logbook to hand as you will need the reference number on it.
