A DVLA vehicle check tells you a car’s tax and MOT status and its basic details, for free. What it won’t tell you is whether the car has been written off, stolen, or still has finance owing, which are the problems that cost used car buyers the most. This guide explains exactly what the DVLA’s check shows, what it leaves out, and when you need a full car history check.
The short answer
- The DVLA check is enough if you just want to know whether a car is taxed, when its MOT runs out, or to confirm its basic details.
- It isn’t enough if you’re buying a car. DVLA records don’t include outstanding finance, insurance write-offs or most stolen-vehicle records. Those come from other databases, which a history check searches.
What does a DVLA vehicle check show?
GOV.UK’s vehicle enquiry service shows what the DVLA holds about a vehicle from its registration:
- vehicle tax: whether it’s taxed, the current rate and when it expires, and whether it’s SORN
- when its MOT expires
- the date it was first registered, and its year of manufacture
- the date its last V5C logbook was issued
- its make, colour, engine size and fuel type
- its type approval category and weight
- its emissions: CO₂, real driving emissions level and Euro status
- whether it’s been marked for export
Our DVLA check and free car check show the same DVLA details and more, including the model, fuel economy, insurance group and the car’s full MOT history.

What a DVLA check doesn’t show
- Outstanding finance. If a lender still owns the car, you could lose it after you’ve paid. Finance is recorded by finance companies, not the DVLA.
- Insurance write-offs. Whether an insurer has written the car off as Cat S, Cat N or worse is recorded in the insurance industry’s database, not on DVLA records.
- Stolen records. Police and insurer theft records aren’t part of the DVLA check.
- Mileage problems. The DVLA doesn’t record mileage. MOT records do, but only once a year, and only once a car is three years old.
- Previous keepers and plate changes. The DVLA won’t tell you who has owned the car. A history check shows how many keepers it’s had and when, and any plate changes.
- Whether the car is scrapped, imported or was a taxi, and what it’s worth.

When is a DVLA check enough?
- Checking your own car’s tax or MOT date.
- Making sure a car you’re about to drive is taxed.
- Confirming a car’s colour, engine size or first registration date match what you’ve been told.
When you need a full history check
Whenever you’re buying a used car. The DVLA check can show a car is taxed, MOT’d and matches its advert, while it still belongs to a finance company, has been written off, or is stolen. Those are the problems that can cost you the car and the money you paid for it.
Our full car history check covers them. If you’re buying from a private seller or a small trader, a Gold check adds an outstanding car finance check using Experian data, backed by a £30,000 guarantee. See Silver and Gold check prices. Our checklist of what to check when buying a used car covers the rest.
Frequently asked questions
Is the DVLA vehicle check free?
Yes. GOV.UK’s vehicle enquiry service is free, and so is our free car check, which shows the same DVLA details and more.
Does a DVLA check show if a car is stolen?
No. Police and insurer theft records aren’t part of it. A history check searches them.
Does a DVLA check show outstanding finance?
No. Finance is recorded by lenders, not the DVLA. You need a history check that includes finance, such as a Gold check.
Does a DVLA check show if a car has been written off?
No. Write-offs are recorded by insurers. A Silver or Gold check shows whether a car has been written off, and in which category.
Can the DVLA tell me who owns a car?
Not through the online check. You have to write to the DVLA, and only get keeper details if you have a reasonable cause, such as a parking or accident matter. A history check shows how many keepers a car has had, but not who they were.
